and Gulf Environmental Company LLC (GENCO)

of services for the Middle East market.
Based in Abu Dhabi, GENCO has considerable
experience in providing environmental solutions
for the oil and gas industry in United Arab
Emirates.
Through its alliance with Scotoil,
GENCO now offers its clients a specialist
expertise to deal with the issues surrounding
the contamination of oilfield equipment
by naturally occurring radioactive material
(NORM) scale.
Together GENCO and Scotoil
provide the complete NORM identification
and control package which includes:
- Highly experienced personnel.
- Induction training on NORM.
- Radiation Protection Supervisor training.
- Radiological protection supervision
for baseline surveys, well workovers,
process equipment cleanout and decommissioning.
- Instrumentation services, including
training, sales, rental, repair and calibration.
MIDDLE EAST
NORM forms when large quantities of water
are injected into oil reservoirs to displace
oil and lift it to the surface. Moving through
the reservoir, the water comes in contact
with the formation water in the rock structure.
This water contains a number of salts,
which come out of the solution. These salts
can include barium, strontium and also the
element radium.
Over time the salts build up as scale on
the inside of oilfield tubulars and can
ultimately render the equipment inoperable.
As radium, which is naturally radioactive,
may be contained in the scale in minute
concentration, the scale itself may be radioactive.
Any radioactivity has to be identified and
measured and to the appropriate controls
implemented.

the collection, transportation, storage
and disposal of NORM contaminated waste
thereby reducing the risk of exposure to
workers and the environment.
